camping while pregnant

The snow has melted, we're having humid days and things are starting to look green.  This is usually when my camping cravings set in.  This year is no exception.  I want to sleep in a tent, smell a campfire and eat lots and lots of smores.  Is that too much to ask?

Months ago I thought that for sure we could sneak in a couple of not too far away camping trips... the kind of camping where you drive to your camping site, unload and set up... nothing too ambitious.  Now that we are nearing camping season and my belly is nearing new proportions every day I'm not so sure about this previous idea of mine.  Sleeping is already a challenge and I am 21 weeks today, what is it going to be like in another 7 or 8 weeks?

I mean, we don't exactly rough it... the inside of our tent has been referred to as a hotel room in the past... air mattresses, duvets... enough gear to last a month... the list goes on.  The bottom line... I love sleeping outside near a lake.

At this point we aren't booking anything and I am pretty sure that Andrew thinks there will be no camping this summer... but part of me really wants to prove him wrong and go.  We will just have to wait and see how I feel and whether he wants to brave not only the wilderness, but a really pregnant wife as well!

What do you think.... camping while pregnant... good idea or pure stupidity?

  1. I think it's great! Just pack plenty of pillows to be as comfy as possible and plan easy foods so you're not cooking or cleaning when you're already tired. I did it twice when I was pregnant with our first baby and it wasn't easy but it was my favorite kind of "babymoon". We did find a restaurant one night when it was raining and we couldn't get the propane stove lit. We also camped a few weeks after our second baby was born. It was suprisingly easy to camp with a newborn! I say go for it.

  2. I think with the right padding and air mattress, it's totally do-able. But I'm not speaking from experience, so don't take my word for it. Maybe picking a place where there are motels not too far, in case you can only sleep in the tent the first night and then you are done. I'm sure you would very much enjoy being out in the fresh air.

  3. One of my favorite stories about my grandmother is her camping (backpacking, actually) with infants back in the 1940s...she backpacked in and out cloth diapers, so the story goes. Can you imagine? Camping while pregnant sounds easy in comparison, right?
I hope you go...would be such fun stories to tell your little ones about their first camping trips...

Augusta - good idea to have a motel in the vicinity as a back up!

  6. Hmmm.... I can't give you unbiased advice because I have never been camping. I know, weird huh? Not even as a kid. I think I am a little too high maintenance... tee hee... o.k., very high maintenance. If I have to go away the bathroom better be marble or I'm not going. If you love it and feel comfortable enough in your pregnancy go for it!! Hope you have been feeling well. Pregnancy is such an exciting time. xo

  9. You could do it - maybe just do something closer to home like you said and maybe just a night or two? Give it a test run and see how you feel.

I love camping too and am a little bummed we probably won't be doing any this summer due to the little guy. I don't think taking a 1 month old camping is a good idea...haha!

  10. I say go for it! Really. Really. Babies are so magical when they arrive, but just think about camping with one. Might as well go while they're stuck in your belly--right?? I mean, if you can't sleep, at least you can stay up and look at the stars! ;)

  11. We are also big time campers! I grew up "roughing it!" I say, as long as you feel good enough, go for it! Just have your hubs do all the heavy lifting!
