I came to this realization while we were walking from the car to babies r us and Andrew was dropping some f-bombs.... I mean we just sort of use these words in normal speech, we're not being malicious or mean spirited. Furthermore, we are not rough... I would like to think that we are quite proper in fact. But it dawned on me... we are outside of babies-r-us.... swearing in this setting is just wrong.... oh shit what if we swear in front of our children....we need to kick this habit asap.
So now am I wondering how easy this will be. It's not like we are addicted to swearing (I hope)... it's just that we don't even notice that we are doing it anymore... in short... we have become immune.
I don't think that we need to go to drastic measures... I mean if I stub my toe or walk into a wall, which I have been know to do these days, then I feel that I have a right to utter a quick curse. I am talking about the regular conversations that we have and needlessly drop a few f-bombs.
Are we alone in this? Do you swear out of habit and if you have children how did you stop (assuming you stopped)? I really cannot stand hearing a parent swear in front of their young child. I refuse to be that parent.

Fuck me, I need to stop that shit asap too!! Hahaha, luckily even once our babes are here we still have a decent amount of time to quit swearing before they will start repeating our words :)
ReplyDeleteNo, I have caught myself doing it in normal conversation where there is no need for it!
ReplyDeleteGood call on working on it early!!
I don't swear ( I think because growing up we weren't even allowed to say 'shut up' or 'that sucks'), but my husband swears more than anyone I've ever met, who wasn't a gangster or something. :) I have been trying to break him of the habit for about two years now, thinking eventually we would have a kid, and this wouldn't be acceptable. If you find out any tricks, let me know because thus far it isn't going very well haha. I remind him every time he uses a curse word, but each time he is in disbelief that he did. He doesn't even notice it anymore either.
ReplyDeleteI swear in regular conversation all the time (with my husband) but I've filtered it in all other cases so I'm pretty sure I'll be able to filter it when I have children.
ReplyDeletehaha this made me laugh! I'm sure everyone goes through it, but completely understand. Don't forget, after you train yourselves you'll also have to re-train your friends. But that can wait until the little ones are a year or starting to say words. Good luck, I'm sure my sister (grade 2 teacher) has some great tricks/replacement words if you are having trouble!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I both swear also, him more than me. I'm hoping it will be easy for us to cut back once the baby is here, but honestly I hadn't really thought about it before. Our goal right now is to get my husband to be a non-tobacco user before baby J arrives, then maybe we can focus on the swearing. :)
ReplyDeleteI work with children, so it helps me not to swear too much. But I do utter profanities on the weekends. I think that once you have those girls in your arms, you won't look back. You'll want the best for them and they will be a constant reminder not to swear.
ReplyDeleteCircus Princess - good point, we have a little time to figure this out.
ReplyDeleteInterior Groupie - forgot about the whole friends who swear issue... that one might be slightly more difficult for sure!
Stephanie - good luck on the tobacco front. Definitely a big challenge, hopefully he can do it!
Augusta - I hope you are right about them being a reminder not to swear!
I am having the best little laugh over here picturing the two of you outside of Babies R Us. I think just like any habit it will take practice to stop. Of course, there are times when nothing is going to be as effective as dropping the F bomb! As a mother of teens I can tell you that once they get into High School they are constantly exposed to it.
ReplyDeleteWe drop the bombs left and right... but somehow when we are around children (nieces, etc...) we're able to keep it under control.. it's just kind of a natural reaction when around children, or older family members who you respect, that they don't flow out as easily... good luck!
ReplyDeleteDebby - yes I have no expectations down the road - just want to keep the swearing down from us - I know come school time it will be much more of a challenge!
ReplyDeleteStudio 13 - I would love to say that I share that natural reaction but my husband and I both drop bombs in front of our parents...
It was never really a conscious thing not swearing in front of my daughter but for some reason I just don't. I guess it's the same way that I've never sworn anywhere I've worked.
ReplyDeleteJust think if you were visiting friend's children or something you wouldn't swear would you so why would you in front of your own?
Dont worry Ash, it's like an auto-switch that just turns itself off when you know the environment isn't right for it. I feel it every time I come home, being around M&D makes me swear less, the little voice in my head goes 'uh uh!' right before a sh#* or f@#* escapes my lips....and living with a sailor-mouthed east coaster for 9 months hasnt helped me.
